Unique Asprey 18ct and Diamond Travelling Dressing set

  • This is a rare opportunity to own an extensive travelling dressing set of 18ct gold and tortoiseshell by Asprey and Co, London c1905. Commissioned for Maud the 5th Duchess of Wellington.

    The set is a commission piece made for Maud, the 5th Duchess of Wellington, some pieces have the monogram or cypher in platinum and diamonds depicting an M with the coronet.  Other items have the Maud signature inscribed.


    To give a brief history of the lady herself, she was born on 3rd Februray 1885 and married Arthur Charles Wellesley, the 5th Duke of Wellington also known as the Marquess of Douro on the 23rd March 1909, died on 3rd May 1946 and is buried at the ancestral home of Stratfield Saye House in Hampshire.  There are various images of her and her family in the National Portrait Gallery.
    Those items with her signature are hallmarked and date to 1905, on her marriage she was entitled to use the monogram of the Marquess and those items with this dates to 1917-18.

    This set including the Moroccan leather travelling case was made by the most prestigious company of Asprey and includes some very rare items.
